Clinton's Confession
by Avinoam Sapir

The following are the main points in President Clinton's confession:

1.  The President said:

a. "This afternoon in this room, from this chair, I testified before the Office of Independent Counsel and the grand jury. I answered their questions truthfully..."

b. "As you know, in a deposition in January, I was asked questions about my relationship with Monica Lewinsky. While my answers were legally accurate, I did not volunteer information."

Please note the change in language from "truthful" in (a) to "accurate" in (b).

"Change of language reflects a change in reality". This is to say that these two words relate to two different situations.

2.  The President said:

a.  "Still, I must take complete responsibility for all my actions, both public and private."

b.  "Now, this matter is between me, the two people I love most -- my wife and our daughter -- and our God. I must put it right, and I am prepared to do whatever it takes to do so."

Please note that taking "complete responsibility", or, putting "it right", is not done out of the president's free will. He "must" do it, but he doesn't want to do it.

3.  The President said:

"Indeed, I did have a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am SOLELY and completely responsible."

The President is relieving Monica Lewinsky of any responsibility.

4.  The President said:

"But I told the grand jury today and I say to you now that at no time did I ask anyone to lie, to hide or destroy evidence or to take any other unlawful action."

Please notice the following:

1)  The president didn't say that he didn't "ask anyone to lie..." He only said what he is saying. This should be considered as lack of commitment as to this part of his statement.

2)  The president ruled out "lying", "hiding and destroying evidence" and "any other unlawful action".

The president didn't rule out "not volunteer(ing) information."

5.  The President said:

"I can only tell you I was motivated by many factors. First, by a desire to protect myself from the embarrassment of my own conduct. I was also very concerned about protecting my family."

Please notice the order of the people. First, himself, and only second is his family.

This point - the family as being with low priority - is confirmed by the following:

"...and I intend to reclaim my family life for my family."

"For my family" but not "for myself".
